Borophene-based Green Lubricant Technology

  • Background: Researchers at the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati, have developed a borophene-based green lubricant formulation using castor oil.

About Borophene-based Green Lubricant Technology

Borophene

  • Borophene is a 2D nanomaterial composed of boron atoms.
  • Due to its high strength and excellent electrical conductivity, it is useful for applications in batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, and green lubricants.
  • Adding just 0.1 weight percent of borophene to castor oil reduces friction by approximately 42% compared to plain castor oil.
  • It disperses uniformly in the oil without requiring chemical modifications and forms a protective tribofilm (friction-reducing layer) containing iron oxides, carbon-based materials, and boron compounds.
  • This film reduces friction, enhances load-bearing capacity, and prevents wear.

Significance

  • Improves mechanical efficiency, extends equipment lifespan, and reduces energy consumption.
  • Supports eco-friendly lubrication technologies.
  • Has potential applications in renewable energy, marine systems, sustainable manufacturing, and green technologies.
