India’s first national framework for childhood diabetes care Context : Union Health Ministry has introduced India’s first structured national framework for childhood diabetes care. Aims to integrate screening, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of diabetes in children (0–18 years) into the public health system. Ensures universal screening of children, with suspected cases undergoing immediate blood glucose testing and referral to district hospitals. Provides a free comprehensive care package at public health facilities, including insulin therapy, diagnostics, glucometers, test strips, and follow-up care. Establishes an integrated continuum of care from community-level screening to district hospitals and advanced care at medical colleges. Positions India among select countries integrating childhood diabetes care into public healthcare systems. Based on guidance aligned with World Health Organization definitions and standards for diabetes management. Promotes early detection through the “4Ts” framework: Toilet, Thirsty, Tired, Thinner. Emphasises family and caregiver training in insulin use, glucose monitoring, emergency response, and daily disease management. Includes evidence-based treatment protocols, regular monitoring schedules, and complication prevention strategies. Expected outcomes: reduced mortality, fewer complications, improved quality of life, lower long-term healthcare costs, and stronger NCD management in children. Aarogya Maitri in Jamaica Context : India has deployed its flagship Aarogya Maitri in Jamaica, marking a major step in strengthening India–Caribbean relations and humanitarian diplomacy. The initiative is part of India’s broader South–South cooperation and India–CARICOM engagement framework, focusing on healthcare, disaster resilience, and capacity building. It is implemented under India’s Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) framework, enabling rapid, technology-enabled medical response in partner countries. The deployment is coordinated by the National Security Council Secretariat in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs, reflecting India’s emphasis on strategic global health partnerships.
