Latest Discoveries in Health Science “Brain-eating amoeba” infection Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a rare infection of the central nervous system caused by Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as “brain-eating amoeba”. Most Naegleria fowleri infections reported around to bathing and swimming in waterbodies. The free-living amoeba, which is mostly found in stagnant freshwater enters the body through the nose. It destroys the brain tissue and causes swelling of the brain. Note The disease, usually fatal, was first detected in Alappuzha municipality, Kerala.
