Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) Context: India made major achievements at the 49th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC49) held in Geneva, Switzerland. About Codex Alimentarius Commission The Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) is an international body responsible for developing global food standards.  It was jointly established in May 1963 by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Headquarters: The headquarters of the Codex Alimentarius Commission is located in Rome, Italy. Objectives To protect the health of consumers by ensuring food safety. To promote fair practices in international food trade by setting common food standards. Membership Membership is open to all Member States and Associate Members of FAO and WHO with an interest in international food standards. Currently, the Commission has 189 members, including: 188 Member States 1 Member Organization – European Union  India joined the CAC in 1964. Meetings The Commission holds a regular session every year. These meetings are held alternately in Geneva and Rome. Funding The activities of the Commission are funded from the regular budgets of FAO and WHO. Current Facts   The national helpline for the elderly is 'Elderline' 14567.
