DRDO’s Successful Scramjet Combustor Test for Hypersonic Missile Development Context: Defence Research and Development Organisation achieved a major breakthrough in hypersonic missile technology through the successful long-duration test of an actively cooled full-scale scramjet combustor. The test was conducted by the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL). The trial was carried out at the Scramjet Connect Pipe Test (SCPT) Facility in Hyderabad The scramjet combustor achieved a continuous run-time of more than 1,200 seconds. This performance improved upon the earlier successful test of over 700 seconds conducted in January 2026. Key Technological Features The combustor was fully designed and developed by DRDL with support from Indian industry partners. The technology uses a supersonic air-breathing engine system essential for hypersonic missile propulsion. The system operates using indigenously developed liquid hydrocarbon endothermic fuel. Advanced high-temperature thermal barrier coating technology was incorporated to withstand extreme heat conditions. The project also utilised advanced manufacturing techniques for high-performance aerospace systems.
