Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) was established on February 27, 1982, as the Tamil Nadu Prevention and Control of Water Pollution Board under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 (Central Act 6 of 1974). It was renamed as the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board in 1983. The TNPCB is responsible for enforcing the provisions of: The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 The Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 Tamil Nadu’s plan to develop coastal tourism circuits The Tamil Nadu government plans to develop coastal tourism circuits in Nagapattinam, Rameswaram, and Kanniyakumari to promote maritime and coastal tourism. The Nagapattinam Cruise Terminal is already functional. Plans are underway to link Poompuhar, Nagapattinam, Velankanni, and Kodiyakarai through a ferry service to enhance tourist connectivity along the coast. A ferry service between Rameswaram and Thalaimannar (Sri Lanka) is being considered — the shortest sea route between India and Sri Lanka. The initiative will be undertaken in coordination with the Tourism Department for holistic coastal development. First-Ever Air Shipment of GI Tagged Indi and Puliyankudi Limes The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitated the first-ever air shipment of GI-tagged Indi Lime (Karnataka) and Puliyankudi Lime (Tamil Nadu) to the United Kingdom. Puliyankudi Lime (Tamil Nadu) It is extensive lime cultivated in Puliyankudi, often referred to as the “Lemon City of Tamil Nadu.” The Puliyankudi Lime, particularly the Kadayam variety, is characterised by its thin peel, strong acidity, high ascorbic acid content (34.3 mg/100g) and juice percentage of around 55%. It is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. It has officially received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in April 2025.
