Green tugboat As part of the wider initiative of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways to shift to diesel-powered tugboats at major ports in India, the Chennai Port Authority is set to get its first “green tugboat” to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Key features of the development: Target - The primary objective is to reduce air pollution and achieve the government’s target of reducing emissions from port vessels by 30% by 2030 Green tugboat specifications - Chennai Port plans to procure a green tugboat powered by clean fuels such as ammonia, hydrogen or methanol, which will significantly reduce emissions compared to traditional diesel tugboats Procurement process - The Port Authority has floated bids to select a supplier to supply, operate and maintain the green tugboat for 15 years. Other Ports Involved--Many major Indian ports like Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Deendayal Port, VO Chidambaranar Port and Paradeep Port have started the process of purchasing green tugboats.
