Theme 2023 - One World, One Health: Prevent Zoonoses, Stop the Spread Background On this day in 1885, the French biologist, Louis Pasteur successfully administered the first vaccine against rabies, which is a zoonotic disease. On July 6, 2007, the 100th anniversary of Louis Pasteur's passing, the first World Zoonoses Day was commemorated to recognise his contributions to the study of zoonotic illnesses. Zoonotic diseases Zoonosis is an infectious disease that has jumped from a non-human animal to humans. Zoonotic pathogens may be bacterial, viral or parasitic, or may involve unconventional agents and can spread to humans through direct contact or through food, water or the environment. Zoonotic Diseases in India A recent report from the State of the World's Forests 2022 predicts India as a potential hotspot for zoonotic viral diseases. About 70% of all emerging diseases such as rabies, swine flu, nipah, brucellosis,  leptospirosis, porcine cysticercosis, kala azar (Black fever) and zika that affect humans are zoonotic in nature.  World Organizations – Pacts and Summits High Seas Treaty The UN adopted the Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) or the High Seas Treaty. It became the third agreement to be approved under UNCLOS, after the 1994 and 1995 treaties, which established the International Seabed Authority and the Fish Stocks agreement. The treaty’s objective is to implement international regulations to protect life in oceans beyond national jurisdiction through international cooperation. The treaty aims to address critical issues such as the increasing sea surface temperatures, overexploitation of marine biodiversity, overfishing, coastal pollution, and unsustainable practices beyond national jurisdiction. Important Days World Tsunami Awareness Day 2023 – November 5 World Tsunami Awareness Day is observed on November 5 to mark to emphasise the importance of Tsunami knowledge and awareness. Theme 2023: Fighting Inequality for a Resilient Future Tsunami affected India on 26 December 2004   International Day for Biosphere Reserve 2023- November 03 International Day for Biosphere Reserve is annually observed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to raise awareness of the importance of biosphere reserves and to promote their conservation and sustainable use. It was first observed in 2022. Theme for 2023 is “Empowering Sustainable Practices” Note There are 18 notified biosphere reserves in India.

In some nations, this day is also referred to as the International Day for Monuments and Sites. The 50th anniversary of UNESCO World Heritage is being commemorated this year. The theme for 2023 is “Heritage Changes”. Books & Authors  Karisal, one of the best novels of Sahitya Akademi award-winning writer Ponneelan, has been translated into English by his granddaughter and doctor Priyadarshini under the title 'Black Soil'. The novel 'Karisal' was published in 1976 on the theme of propagating left-wing ideologies and the formation of farmers' unions in and around Kovilpatti. Ponneelan won the 1994 Sahitya Akademi Award for his Tamil novel Pudhiya Dharisanangal.

Important days April 5- National Maritime Day Each year, India celebrates National Maritime Day on April 5 to commemorate India's first merchant sea voyage in the trading world. The day was first celebrated in the year 1964. Defence 'SLINEX-2023' The 10th edition of anuual SLINEX-2023 bilateral maritime exercise between India and Sri Lanka has commenced in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The exercise will be conducted from 03-08 April 2023. The exercise is divided into two phases, the Harbour Phase and the Sea Phase, each lasting three days. The Indian Navy is represented by INS Kiltan and INS Savitri. SLINEX is being organised since 2005. The aim of the exercise is to enhance inter-operability, improve mutual understanding, and exchange best practices and procedures in multi-faceted maritime operations between both navies.

Good Governance Day or Sushasan Divas - December 25 The day is being celebrated on December 25 to commemorate the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee since 2014 The day aims to create awareness amongst the citizenry, especially young people, who are the future of the country. Good Governance Day acts as a reminder to the government that it should be unbiased, transparent and development-oriented. History On 23 December 2014, former Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (posthumously) were announced as recipients of India's highest civilian award for merit, the Bharat Ratna, by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 established the birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister as Good Governance Day.
