Important Days Constitution Day Constitution Day, also known as 'Samvidhan Divas', is celebrated in our country on 26th November every year since 2015 to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India. On 26th November 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India, which came into effect from 26th January 1950. About the Constitution of India The framing of the Constitution took over 2 years, 11 months and 17 days. There were 299 members in the Constituent Assembly and 15 were women and when the constitution was adopted in 1949, 284 members finally signed it. During this period, it held 11 sessions covering 165 days, and its members submitted around 7,600 amendments to the draft Constitution. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the chairman of the Constituent Assembly. Dr BR Ambedkar was the chairman of the Drafting Committee of India's Constitution. He is known as the "Father of the constitution". Originally, the Indian Constitution had a total of 395 articles (divided into 22 parts) and 8 schedules. Women in drafting of Constitution 15 women were the members of the Constituent Assembly that contributed in the making of the constitution. One of them is Dakshayini Velayudhan, who belonged to a marginalised community and made important interventions to protect the rights of the oppressed classes. Durgabai Deshmukh, Hansa Mehta, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, Sarojini Naidu, Vijay Lakshmi Pandit and the other women members had contributed significantly on topics related to women.
