India’s Export Growth and Sector-wise Performance Context: India has built a strong and resilient export-driven economy by utilising its sound banking sector, substantial foreign exchange reserves, and a stable current account position. Overall Exports: India’s total exports increased by 6.15% year-on-year, reaching $720.76 billion during April–January 2025–26. Services Exports: Exports in the services sector rose to $354.13 billion, registering a 10.57% year-on-year growth. Trade Partnerships: According to the UNCTAD Trade and Development Report 2025, India ranks third among Global South economies in terms of diversity of trade partnerships, after China and the United Arab Emirates. Free Trade Agreements: Over the past three years, India has finalised nine Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) covering 38 countries. Market Access: These FTAs grant mostly duty-free access to markets that together account for around 70% of global GDP. Sector-wise Export Performance Electronics: In FY25, electronics became India’s third-largest export category, following engineering goods and petroleum products. Mobile Phones: India has become the second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones globally, with production increasing 28 times between FY15 and FY25. Petroleum: India holds the 7th position worldwide in refined petroleum exports and is also counted among the top five refining countries. Pharmaceuticals: Often called the “Pharmacy of the World,” India ranks third globally in pharmaceutical exports by volume and 11th by value. Automobiles: The automobile sector, which provides employment to over 30 million people, recorded around 30% growth in exports from FY21 to FY25. Textiles: India stands as the sixth-largest exporter of textiles and apparel, contributing about 4% to global textile exports. Defence: Defence exports have increased nearly 23 times, rising from less than ₹1,000 crore in 2014 to ₹23,622 crore in FY25, with exports now reaching more than 100 countries.
