Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi Memorial Day Indira Gandhi served as the Prime Minister of India for three terms from 1966 to 1980. Indira Gandhi announced the nationalization of 14 commercial banks in India on July 19, 1969. This decision was taken under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. The Twenty-Point Plan, launched by Indira Gandhi in 1975, aimed to eradicate poverty and improve the living standards of the backward classes in the country. The plan was reformed in 1982 and 1986 and reintroduced in 2006 with new schemes and programs. Indira Gandhi was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1972.
