REPORTS AND INDICES National Crime Records Bureau 2024 report Context : According to data released by National Crime Records Bureau, 13,396 cases of crimes against women and 7,662 cases of crimes against children were registered in 2024. Crime rate per lakh population declined to 418.9 from 448.3, and overall case registrations fell by 6.0 percent compared to 2023. Crimes against women decreased by 1.5 percent to around 4.4 lakh cases, while cruelty by husband accounted for about 42 percent of such cases, and a new category “Offences against Women and Child” was introduced under BNS. Crimes against children increased by 5.9 percent to around 1.8 lakh cases, while crimes against senior citizens rose by 16.9 percent, mainly due to theft and fraud. Crimes against Scheduled Castes decreased by 3.6 percent and against Scheduled Tribes by 23.1 percent, showing a decline in both categories. Cybercrime surged by 17.9 percent, with fraud accounting for nearly 73 percent of cases, and economic offenses increased by 4.6 percent, mainly due to forgery, cheating, and fraud. Juveniles in conflict with law increased by 11.2 percent, with around 77.7 percent belonging to the 16–18 age group. According to the report, the number of traffic accidents increased from 4.91 lakh in 2023 to 4.95 lakh in 2024, with 4.52 lakh people injured in 2024. The top three states in terms of fatalities are Uttar Pradesh (27,071), Tamil Nadu (20,390) and Maharashtra (19,475), which account for 13.6 per cent, 10.2 per cent and 9.8 per cent of total deaths in traffic accidents, respectively, and collectively account for 33.6 per cent of all traffic deaths in 2024.
