PM-KUSUM 2.0 to Include Battery Storage Context: The government is exploring the inclusion of a battery energy storage component in the upgraded PM-KUSUM 2.0 scheme. About PM-KUSU PM-KUSUM refers to the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan. The existing scheme, introduced in 2019, is scheduled to conclude in March 2026, and its revised version is expected to be named PM-KUSUM 2.0. This proposal has gained attention because the current scheme mainly focuses on solarising agricultural pumps and does not cover battery storage. The initiative aims to lessen farmers’ reliance on diesel and conventional grid electricity. It also contributes to India’s larger shift toward renewable energy. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is responsible for implementing the scheme. It operates on a cost-sharing model, with 30% subsidy each from the central and state governments, and the remaining 40% borne by farmers. Role of Battery Storage Battery storage systems can capture excess solar energy produced during peak sunlight hours. This stored energy can be used later when demand is high but solar generation is low. Thus, incorporating battery storage is seen as a way to enhance energy efficiency, ensure a reliable power supply, and maintain grid stability.
