Report/ Survey Post-COVID Healthcare Advancements in Tamil Nadu Context:A study conducted by IIT Madras reveals that, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tamil Nadu's emergency healthcare system has strengthened significantly, and notable improvements have been observed in maternal and child health indicators. Research Team and Study Period On behalf of IIT Madras, a research team led by retired IPS officer Kandaswamy—and including Unnitor, an Associate Analyst at the Bengaluru-based firm Moody's Analytics—conducted this study on the state of healthcare in post-COVID Tamil Nadu. Key Findings of the Study The study analyzed eight years of data regarding the '108' Ambulance Service, spanning the period from 2017 to 2024. According to the findings, Tamil Nadu's healthcare system has demonstrated a rapid recovery following the challenges posed by the pandemic, and its overall operational efficiency has improved. Improvements in Maternal and Child Health Furthermore, the maternal mortality rate has declined by 19 percent, while the incidence of home births has dropped by over 36 percent. The study also noted a 28 percent reduction in miscarriages, a 17 percent reduction in neonatal mortality, and a 19 percent reduction in infant mortality. Overall, significant progress has been achieved in key maternal and child health indicators. Primary Factors Contributing to the Progress The study results indicate that the expansion of emergency medical infrastructure, an increase in the healthcare workforce, and the implementation of specialized initiatives—such as the 'Suvanam' program—within maternal and child welfare schemes have been the primary drivers behind these advancements.
