Rare Golden Jackals Forest officials have discovered a large number of rare Golden Jackals in the Pichavaram Surapunnai forests near Chidambaram in Cuddalore district. Mangrove forests in Pichavaram cover an area of 3,000 acres. These forests include backwaters and dense mangrove (surapunnai) forests. These Surapunnai forests are home to a large number of otters and Golden Jackals. They feed on fish, crabs, and shrimp. Golden Jackals are considered the cleaners of the forests.
