About UN Security Council The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is a group of 195 nations formed in October 1945 to maintain international peace and security. The Security Council is the successor to the previously created League of Nations. India's participation in the Security Council has been as a non-permanent member during the periods of 1950-51, 1967-68, 1972-73, 1977-78, 1984-85, 1991-92, 2011-12, and 2021-22. The Council comprises 15 members, including 5 permanent members (P5)- China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States—who possess veto power, and 10 non-permanent members elected for 2-year terms by the UN General Assembly (UNGA).
