History and culture

Keezhadi Excavation

  • The Central Government has granted permission for the 11th phase of archaeological excavations in Keezhadi, Sivaganga district.
  • This permission was granted after the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology submitted the report of the 10th phase of excavations to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
  • So far, only about 4% of the Keezhadi site has been excavated.
  • The 11th phase of excavation aims to uncover new information about the ancient civilization that flourished on the banks of the Vaigai River.
  • Through scientific studies and carbon dating methods, the artifacts found in Keezhadi have been proven to belong to the period between the 6th and 3rd centuries BCE.

Keezhadi

  • It is located in the Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu, on the banks of the Vaigai River, approximately 12 km southeast of Madurai.
  • Archaeological excavations were started in 2015 under the leadership of Amarnath Ramakrishna.
  • The first three excavations were conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
  • Subsequently, the work was undertaken by the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology.
  • More than 120 pottery shards inscribed with Tamil-Brahmi script indicate early literacy and a long-standing continuity of the writing system.
  • This indicates a well-planned urban settlement.
  • Evidence has been found for organized industries such as pottery, weaving, dyeing, and bead-making.
  • Agate and carnelian beads point to long-distance trade networks.
