- Context: The Economic Survey of India for 2025–26 has recognized Tamil Nadu’s ‘Climate Resilient Villages’ project as a model best practice.
About the ‘Climate Resilient Villages’ Project

- Launched in 2023 under the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission, this project aims to enhance the adaptive capacity of rural areas to withstand climate change.
- The project is implemented in collaboration with the World Resources Institute (WRI), combining scientific assessment with the participation of local communities.
- The primary goal is to create sustainable and disaster-resilient villages capable of facing the impacts of climate change.
- The project ensures region-specific defense strategies tailored to various ecosystems, including coastal areas, forests, mountains, river basins, and tourism-dependent zones.

- The selected villages function as a ‘Climate Smart Village’ model. These include:
- Kodiakkarai, Muthupet, Pichavaram, Rameswaram, Yercaud, Ooty, Hogenakkal, Pulicat, and Tiruchendur.
Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission

- The Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission was launched following an announcement in the 2021–22 State Budget.
- It is established under the Department of Environment and Climate Change.
- Its primary role is to coordinate climate adaptation and mitigation efforts across various government departments and districts.
- The mission aims to enhance Tamil Nadu’s resilience to climate change, protect natural resources, minimize vulnerabilities, and promote sustainable development in alignment with climate change goals.
