Initiatives / Schemes Tamil Nadu Climate Resilient Villages Context: The Economic Survey of India for 2025–26 has recognized Tamil Nadu’s 'Climate Resilient Villages' project as a model best practice. About the 'Climate Resilient Villages' Project Launched in 2023 under the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission, this project aims to enhance the adaptive capacity of rural areas to withstand climate change. The project is implemented in collaboration with the World Resources Institute (WRI), combining scientific assessment with the participation of local communities. The primary goal is to create sustainable and disaster-resilient villages capable of facing the impacts of climate change. The project ensures region-specific defense strategies tailored to various ecosystems, including coastal areas, forests, mountains, river basins, and tourism-dependent zones. The selected villages function as a 'Climate Smart Village' model. These include: Kodiakkarai, Muthupet, Pichavaram, Rameswaram, Yercaud, Ooty, Hogenakkal, Pulicat, and Tiruchendur. Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission The Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission was launched following an announcement in the 2021–22 State Budget. It is established under the Department of Environment and Climate Change. Its primary role is to coordinate climate adaptation and mitigation efforts across various government departments and districts. The mission aims to enhance Tamil Nadu's resilience to climate change, protect natural resources, minimize vulnerabilities, and promote sustainable development in alignment with climate change goals.
