Tamil Nadu’s Push to Become an AI Hub 

  • Context: Tamil Nadu plans to establish itself as a major regional hub for Artificial Intelligence (AI). 
  • Focus is on developing indigenous AI capabilities and Tamil-language AI ecosystems. 

Development of Tamil Large Language Models (LLMs)

  • The state aims to build Large Language Models (LLMs) specifically tailored for Tamil computing. 
  • Initiative seeks to reduce dependence on English-centric AI models dominated by global tech companies. 

Strengthening AI Infrastructure

  • Tamil Nadu is increasing investments in: 
    • Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) 
    • High-performance computing infrastructure 
    • Digital public infrastructure for AI 
  • GPUs are essential for training and running advanced AI models due to their parallel processing capability. 

Collaboration with International Institutions

  • The government is exploring partnerships with several organisations. 
  • Discussions are underway with the National University of Singapore for academic collaboration. 

Indigenous AI Ecosystem

  • Talks are being held with Sarvam AI to strengthen local AI capabilities. 
  • Emphasis on creating: Tamil AI tools, Tamil datasets, Vernacular AI resources 

Role of Tamil Virtual Academy

  • Tamil Virtual Academy will play a major role in: 
    • Expanding Tamil-language AI resources 
    • Supporting Tamil computing projects 

Connection with National AI Mission

  • Tamil Nadu has not yet implemented the Union Government’s National AI Mission. 
  • The National AI Mission was approved in 2024 with an outlay of about ₹10,300 crore. 

Objectives of National AI Mission

  • Build large-scale GPU infrastructure 
  • Support Indian AI startups 
  • Develop indigenous Indian Large Language Models (LLMs)
