Initiatives/ Scheme Tamil Nadu’s Push to Become an AI Hub  Context: Tamil Nadu plans to establish itself as a major regional hub for Artificial Intelligence (AI).  Focus is on developing indigenous AI capabilities and Tamil-language AI ecosystems.  Development of Tamil Large Language Models (LLMs) The state aims to build Large Language Models (LLMs) specifically tailored for Tamil computing.  Initiative seeks to reduce dependence on English-centric AI models dominated by global tech companies.  Strengthening AI Infrastructure Tamil Nadu is increasing investments in:  Graphics Processing Units (GPUs)  High-performance computing infrastructure  Digital public infrastructure for AI  GPUs are essential for training and running advanced AI models due to their parallel processing capability.  Collaboration with International Institutions The government is exploring partnerships with several organisations.  Discussions are underway with the National University of Singapore for academic collaboration.  Indigenous AI Ecosystem Talks are being held with Sarvam AI to strengthen local AI capabilities.  Emphasis on creating: Tamil AI tools, Tamil datasets, Vernacular AI resources  Role of Tamil Virtual Academy Tamil Virtual Academy will play a major role in:  Expanding Tamil-language AI resources  Supporting Tamil computing projects  Connection with National AI Mission Tamil Nadu has not yet implemented the Union Government’s National AI Mission.  The National AI Mission was approved in 2024 with an outlay of about ₹10,300 crore.  Objectives of National AI Mission Build large-scale GPU infrastructure  Support Indian AI startups  Develop indigenous Indian Large Language Models (LLMs)
