World Teacher’s Day – October 5

  • World Teacher’s Day is held annually on 5 October to celebrate all teachers around the globe.
  • Theme 2023 – “The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage”.

Note

  • World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated since 1994 by UNESCO.

Vallalar’s 200th birth anniversary – 5th October

  • October 5, the birth anniversary of Arul Prakasha Vallalar, is observed annually as Thaniperkarunai Day.

About Vallalar

  • Ramalinga Adikalar popularly known as Arudprakasa Vallalar was born on 5th October 1823 at Marudur, 10 miles from Chidambaram in Cuddalore district.
  • In 1856 he founded Samarasa Suddha Sanmargam to signify that all faiths have the same truth.
  • He used to sing that whenever he saw a withered crop he said that he had withered, and he established the Satyadharma Road in 1867 to satisfy the hunger of the people. The stove he lit continues to burn till today and fills the stomachs of hungry people.
  • In 1872, he raised the Sathyajnana Sabha in Vadalur.
  • Wrote the prose works Manupati Kanda Vasakam and Jivakarunya Moral. His collection of songs is known as Tiruvarutpa. It is divided into six stages.
  • He founded the Samarasa Sutta Sanmarka Satya Sangam and built the Satya Dharmachala and the Siddhi Complex. He lived as an anorexic doctor. Vallalar’s light of spiritual unity continues to dispel ignorance and instill love even today.

Awards & Honours

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2023

  • Scientists – Moungi G. Bawendi, Louis E. Brus and Alexei I. Ekimov
  • Contribution – The discovery and development of quantum dots
  • Award presented by – The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
  • Cash award – 10 million Swedish kronor (nearly 7.5 crore indian rupees)
  • Awarded on – December 10 (the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death)

Quantum dots

  • These tiny particles have unique properties and now spread their light from television screens and LED lamps.
  • They catalyse chemical reactions and their clear light can illuminate tumour tissue for a surgeon.

Note

The money comes from a bequest left by the prize’s creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who died in 1895.
