Important Days World Smile Day 2023  World Smile Day is celebrated on the first Friday of October each year.This year, it falls on October 6, 2023. The idea behind this day is to promote acts of kindness and to encourage people to smile. World Smile Day Theme 2023: "Do an act of kindness - help one person smile". NOTE World smile day is celebrated since 1999. Awards & Honours Nobel Prize for Literature 2023 The Nobel Prize for Literature 2023 has been announced to Norway's famous writer Jan Fosse (64). Contribution - He has been given the honor for bringing out hitherto unspoken ideas through his wide range of writings ranging from plays, novels, poetry and children's books. Awarding Institution – Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences Cash Prize – The Nobel Prize for Literature carries a prize money of $1 million (roughly Rs. 8.32 crore) along with a gold medal and certificate. Important Days World Teacher’s Day – October 5 World Teacher’s Day is held annually on 5 October to celebrate all teachers around the globe. Theme 2023 - "The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage". Note World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated since 1994 by UNESCO. Vallalar's 200th birth anniversary - 5th October October 5, the birth anniversary of Arul Prakasha Vallalar, is observed annually as Thaniperkarunai Day. About Vallalar Ramalinga Adikalar popularly known as Arudprakasa Vallalar was born on 5th October 1823 at Marudur, 10 miles from Chidambaram in Cuddalore district. In 1856 he founded Samarasa Suddha Sanmargam to signify that all faiths have the same truth. He used to sing that whenever he saw a withered crop he said that he had withered, and he established the Satyadharma Road in 1867 to satisfy the hunger of the people. The stove he lit continues to burn till today and fills the stomachs of hungry people. In 1872, he raised the Sathyajnana Sabha in Vadalur. Wrote the prose works Manupati Kanda Vasakam and Jivakarunya Moral. His collection of songs is known as Tiruvarutpa. It is divided into six stages. He founded the Samarasa Sutta Sanmarka Satya Sangam and built the Satya Dharmachala and the Siddhi Complex. He lived as an anorexic doctor. Important Days World Animal Welfare Day – October 4 Every year World Animal Day is observed globally on October 4 with an aim to celebrate animal rights and welfare around the world. Theme 2023 - "Great or Small, Love Them All". World Animal Day has been marked since 1925. According to World Animal Protection, it was started by Heinrich Zimmermann, a cynologist, who organised the first celebration at the Sports Palace in Berlin, which was reportedly attended by over 5,000 people. World Space Week – October 04 to 10 By the resolution of General Assembly on 6 December 1999, proclaimed World Space Week, to celebrate the contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition. Theme 2023 - “Space and Entrepreneurship” Background On 4 October 1957, the launch into outer space of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, opened the way for space exploration. A decade later, on 10 October 1967, the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies entered into force. Awards & Honours Olivier Award: Chennai-born Singaporean actor Anjana Vasan has won the best supporting actress in a play at the 47th edition of Olivier Awards, for playing Stella Kowalski in the revival of American playwright Tennessee Williams 'A Streetcar Named Desire'. The Oliviers are the Oscars of London theatre and the 36-year-old is the first Singaporean to win the prestigious award. Ma.Aranganathan literary award: Writers K. Panchangam and SureshKumara Indrajith will be conferred with the Ma. Aranganathan Literary Award (2023) on behalf of 'Munril' literary organisation. The 'Ma.Aranganathan Literary Award' presented on behalf of the Literary Association in the memory of M. Aranganathan, one of the distinguished creators of Tamil cinema. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh each.

DEFENCE Exercise Bold Kurukshetra Recently, the Singapore Army and Indian Army participated in Exercise Bold Kurukshetra which was held at Jodhpur Military Station, India. It was the 13th edition of Exercise Bold Kurukshetra, a bilateral military exercise between India and the Singapore army. For the first time in the exercise series, both armies participated in a command post Exercise, which involved Battalion and Brigade level planning elements and  computer wargaming. It involved an understanding of mechanised warfare in emerging threats and evolving technologies, developing inter-operability through a computer simulation-based Wargame using joint operational and tactical procedures controlled through a joint command post. First conducted in 2005, this exercise underscores the strong and long-standing bilateral defence relationship between both countries and enhances cooperation between the two armies. Place in News: Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated World's longest railway platform of 1507 metres at Sri Siddhaarooda railway station in Hubballi in the state of Karnataka. Hubbali is now registered in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest platform. Gorakhpur platform in Uttar Pradesh is now the second longest at 1,366.33 meters, and Kollam Junction in Kerala has the third longest platform. SPORTS AND GAMES India’s Youth Affairs and Sports Minister, Anurag Singh Thakur, inaugurated the 13th IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi. India has fielded a strong contingent for the tournament, with Nikhat Zareen, Lovlina Borgohain, Saweety Boora, and Preeti all set to participate in the event.
