Indian Army postpones six-day conference of top commanders

The Indian Army has postponed a six-day conference of its top commanders next week in view of rising cases of coronavirus in the country The conference was to be held from April 13 to 18. In the conference, the Army commanders were set to carry out overall review of India's security challenges, particularly along the borders with Pakistan and China.

The Indian Army’s College of Military Engineering (CME), Pune, Maharashtra, jointly with a private firm developed gunshot locators named as “Parth”. The device is much cheaper than the imported ones. Army open to giving pension for women officer litigants

The Army is open to giving pension to women officers who have finished the pensionable service limit, defence sources announced. The limit for officers is 20 years and for Junior Commissioned Officersand Other Ranks 15 years. On Permanent Commission (PC), sources announced the Army has already opened several areas recently and prospectively but that cannot be applied retrospectively to the women officers who have taken the legal route on Permanent Commission.

In a vital development, a Major in the Indian Army, Anoop Mishrahas developed the world’s 1st bulletproof helmet which can stop an AK-47 bullet round from a distance of as less as 10 meters. The helmet is developed under the Indian Army’s “Abhedya” project.

The Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) handed over Sharang, the first 130mm M-46 artillery gun upgraded to 155mm to the Indian Army. The gun’s range has now gone from 27km to over 36km with the upgrade. It also has more explosive capability and hence and more damage potential, the official stated. In all, OFB will upgrade 300 130mm guns to 155mm and the contract will be completed in four years. The Army inducted its first modern artillery guns system in November 2018. These include M-777 Ultra Light Howitzers (ULH) from the U.S. and K9 Vajra-T.

Army sign deal for six Apache attack helicopters

The deal for six AH-64E Apache attack helicoptersfor the Indian Army, estimated to cost around $930 million, is likely to be signed early next year. These are in addition to 22 Apaches being inducted by the Indian Air force (IAF). For this, India is exercising the optional clause in the original deal for 22 Apaches, that has a provision for 11 helicopters. The Army had made a pitch for all of them, but the government had limited it to six. The IAF has recently inducted the first batch of eight Apaches based in Pathankot. All the 22 Apaches are expected to be delivered by 2020 and will replace the ageing Russian Mi-35 attack helicopters in service.
