UMMID Programme CONTEXT: The Union Minister of Science and Technology Dedicates UMMID Programme to the Nation,Says Genomic and Precision Medicine Will Shape the Future of Healthcare About UMMID Programme The UMMID (Unique Methods of Management and Treatment of Inherited Disorders) programme is an initiative of the Government of India aimed at addressing inherited genetic disorders among pregnant women and newborn babies. Nodal Ministry: Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology to tackle inherited genetic disorders. The programme focuses on preventing rare genetic diseases through early detection, genomic testing, and genetic counseling. Objectives of the Programme Prevention and Counseling: To screen pregnant women and newborns for inherited genetic disorders and provide timely medical guidance and treatment. Capacity Building: To train doctors and healthcare professionals in areas such as molecular genetics, cytogenetics, and clinical genetics. Diagnostic Network: To establish NIDAN (National Inherited Diseases Administration) Kendras across the country for advanced diagnosis and comprehensive patient care. Major Components NIDAN Kendras: Around 30 regional centers have been set up to provide prenatal testing, newborn screening, counseling, and diagnostic services in different parts of the country. Training Centres: Institutions such as All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Christian Medical College, and The Madras Medical Mission serve as centres of excellence for training healthcare professionals. Screening in Aspirational Districts: Special emphasis is given to aspirational districts for large-scale genetic screening of pregnant women and newborn children. The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) Context:The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), implemented by the National Health Authority under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has achieved a major milestone with over 100 crore health records successfully linked with Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA).
