Eminent Persons Birsa Munda Birth Annivesary (Janjatiya Gaurav Divas) President Droupadi Murmu, who was appointed India’s first tribal woman president, visited Ulihatu village in the Khunti district of Jharkhand – the birthplace of ‘Bhagwan’ Birsa Munda – and paid floral tributes. Note The Munda tribe inhabits the Chota Nagpur region of the present-day Jharkhand. Birsa Munda was born in 1875, during the time when the British were attempting to establish control over and exploit forest lands, disrupting the tribal way of life. A feudal zamindari system was introduced, destroying the tribal “Khuntkatti” agrarian and land ownership system that was more community-based. The Raj brought in outsiders — moneylenders and contractors, as well as feudal landlords — to aid them. Munda received his early education under the guidance of his teacher Jaipal Nag. Influenced by him, Birsa converted to Christianity in order to join the German Mission school but discontinued later. The Sardar Agitation (1886-1890) had a strong impact on him and he became a part of the anti-missionary and anti-government programmes. The Ulgulan movement of 1899 involved the use of weapons and guerrilla warfare to drive out foreigners. Munda encouraged the tribals to refuse following colonial laws and paying rent. He encouraged changes in the social sphere too, challenging religious practices to fight against superstition, and became known as ‘Bhagwan’ (God) and ‘Dharati Aba’ (Father of the earth) by his followers. Defence, National Security and Terrorism Chiefs of Indian, French Air Forces join ongoing Garuda-VII air exercise The 7th edition of the Bilateral Exercise Garuda VII-2022 is being held between Indian Air Force (IAF), and French Air and Space Force (FASF) at Air Force Station, Jodhpur, Rajasthan from October 26 – November 12, 2022, In this exercise, FASF will participate with four Rafale fighter aircraft, one A-330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft and a contingent of 220 personnel. The IAF is participating with Su-30 MKI, Rafale, Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas and Jaguar fighter aircraft, as well as the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) and Mi-17 helicopters. It is the 4th edition of exercise hosted by India viz. 2003 (1st), 2006 (3rd) and 2014 (5th) at Air Force stations Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh), Kalaikunda (West Bengal) and Jodhpur, respectively. In France, the second, fourth, and sixth editions took place in 2005, 2010, and 2019. Janaki Ammal: Life and Scientific Contributions”, featuring the life and remarkable achievements of Edavalath Kakkat Janaki Ammal (E. K. Janaki Ammal), India’s first woman botanist. The book, published by Enview Research and Development, was released during the event organised on the 125th birth anniversary of E. K. Janaki Ammal. Retired High Court Chief Justice Rituraj Awasthi was appointed chairperson of the Law Commission, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said. Justice K.T. Sankaran, Professor Anand Paliwal, Professor D.P. Verma, Professor Raka Arya and M Karunanithi have been appointed as members of the commission. The appointment comes after more than two years after the 22nd Law Commission was notified on February 24, 2020.
