Defence, National Security and Terrorism 27th edition of Malabar naval exercise The 27th edition of the multilateral naval exercise Malabar 2023 was concluded in Sydney, Australia. The exercise saw the participation of Ships, Submarines, and aircraft from  Indian Navy Royal Australian Navy Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force US Navy Indian Navy was represented by indigenously built  Destroyer INS Kolkata Frigate INS Sahyadri P8I Maritime Patrol Aircraft Note  The MALABAR naval exercise commenced in 1992 as a bilateral exercise between Indian Navy and US Navy.  Later it included four prominent navies in the Indo-Pacific Region. Panel to curb stress in realty sector An expert committee headed by former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant committee was set up in March 2023 to tackle the problem of incomplete real estate projects based on the recommendation made by the Central Advisory Council under the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016.  Key Findings of the Panel  Identifying financial viability as the primary reason for stress in real estate projects. Judicial interventions such as Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) (formed in 2016) should be used as a last resort.

Defence, National Security and Terrorism NIA Raids in Kashmir The National Investigation Agency (NIA) raided the premises of hybrid terrorists and overground workers linked with the newly formed offshoots and affiliates of banned terror outfits in Anantnag, Shopian and Pulwama districts of south Kashmir. The newly floated terror outfits under investigation include The Resistance Front, United Liberation Front Jammu & Kashmir, Mujahideen Gazwat-ul-Hind, Jammu & Kashmir Freedom Fighters, Kashmir Tigers, PAAF and others. Defence The country's Defence exports have touched an all-time high of ₹15,920 crore in FY 2022-23 This is nearly ₹3,000 crore more than the previous fiscal year and a 10-fold increase from 2016-17. India currently exports to 85 countries. With over 100 companies currently exporting defense products, the Indian industry has showcased its design and development capabilities to the world.  The growing defense exports and participation of 104 countries in Aero India 2023 is a testament to India's growing defense manufacturing capabilities. Aero India is a biennial air show and aviation exhibition held in Bengaluru, India at the Yelahanka Air Force Station.  It is organised by the Defence Exhibition Organisation, Ministry of Defence. The country exports key platforms such as Dornier-228, 155 mm Advanced Mounted Artillery Guns (ATAGs), BrahMos missiles, Akash surface-to-air missiles, radars, simulators, mine protected vehicles, armored vehicles and Binaka rocket launchers.  Global demand for light combat aircraft (LCA)-Tejas, light combat helicopters, aircraft carrier, maintenance, repair and overhaul activities is increasing.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi said this achievement is a clear manifestation of India's  passion for 'Make in India'.

DEFENCE INS sahyadri 2023 Indian Navy's indigenously built guided missile frigate, INS Sahyadri participated in a Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) with French Navy (FN), conducted in the Arabian Sea on 10 - 11 March 2023. INS Sahyadri is fitted with state-of-the art weapons and sensors, which makes her capable of detecting and neutralising air, surface and sub-surface threats. Defence Two-day Shinyuu Maitri bilateral exercise with the Japan Air Self-Defence Force (JASDF). The exercise is being organised on the sidelines of the Indo-Japan Joint Army Exercise, Dharma Guardian. Latest Court verdicts A Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court directed in a landmark judgment that the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election commissioners will be appointed by the President on the advice of a the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha or the leader of the single largest party in Opposition and the Chief Justice of India (CJI.)   The high-powered committee would continue to advise the President on the appointment until Parliament enacts a law on the appointment process of Election Commissioners. CECs and Election Commissioners have so far been appointed by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister. The procedural safeguards in place for effecting the removal of a CEC should be extended to the Election Commissioners under the first proviso to Article 324(5) of the Constitution. A CEC, like Supreme Court judges, can be removed from office only by way of impeachment.

Defence India’s First anti-submarine warfare ship The Indian Navy launched the INS Arnala. It is the first of eight indigenously built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) at shipbuilding facility of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) in Kattupalli, Chennai. It is built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), Kolkata, West Bengal. The ship’s name, “Arnala” honours the strategic maritime significance that was bestowed on the island of Arnala by the Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji.  Note On April 2019, the Ministry of Defence and GRSE, Kolkata, signed a deal for the construction of eight ASW-SWC ships. Awards and Honour Digital India Awards (DIA) 2022 The Smart Cities Mission of the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has won the Platinum icon award in the Digital India Awards (DIA) 2022 under the Data Sharing and Use for Socio Economic Development category for the initiative “DataSmart Cities: Empowering Cities through Data”. DIA honours innovative digital solutions by government entities in realising Digital India vision. 2022 marks the 7th edition of the Digital India Awards (DIA). Defence, National Security and Terrorism Exercise Garuda Shakti (8th Edition) 2022 The 8th edition of the India-Indonesia bilateral joint training exercise “Garuda Shakti” began at the Sangga Buana training centre in Karawang, West Java, Indonesia. Garuda Shakti 2022 is a part of military-to-military exchange programs. Note The first edition of Exercise Garuda Shakti was conducted in 2012 in India. About Indonesia Capital - Jakarta Currency - Indonesian rupiah President - Joko Widodo Awards and Honour  Kuvempu Rashtriya Puraskar Award 2022 The Tamil Writer Annamalai has been selected for the Kuvempu Rashtriya Puraskar Award 2022 by the Rashtrakavi Kuvempu Prathishtana (Trust), Kuppali, Karnataka.  The national award was instituted in memory of the late poet laureate Kuvempu of Kannada Literature Since 2013, the memorial foundation named after him has been honoring the best writers in each language with the Rashtriya Puraskar National Award. The award carries a cash award of ₹5 lakh, a silver medal and a citation. About Annamalai Annamalai writes under the pen name Imayam. He has authored seven novels, six short story collections and a novella. He has brought new sensibilities to his writings in Tamil. Defence, National Security and Terrorism Operation – Sea Sword 2  INS Trikand participated in the ‘Sea Sword 2’, which is a Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) led Focused Operation held in the Northwest Arabian Sea to counter terrorism, prevent narcotics trade and stop smuggling entities from using the seas. The Indian Navy’s long range maritime patrol aircraft also participated in the operation and provided air support. This effort is a part of the Indian Navy’s commitment towards ensuring safety of the seas and collective security in the region, supported by Prime Minister’s SAGAR vision. About INS Trikand: INS Trikand (F51) is the third and the final ship of the 2nd batch of Talwar-class frigates of the Indian Navy. INS Trikand was built by the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad, Russia. The other two Talwar-class frigates, INS Teg and INS Tarkash were commissioned in 2021 at the Western Fleet. Awards and Honour  India receives EXCELL Award at International Conference on Family Planning India’s family planning measures got appreciation on a global stage with the country receiving Excellence in Leadership in Family Planning (EXCELL) Awards -2022.  The award was received at the International Conference on Family Planning held in Pattaya, Thailand.  India came out as the only country which bagged this award in the ‘country category’ at the conference.  The International Conference of Family Planning focuses on universal access to family planning. It provides a platform to discuss various issues pertaining to family planning and awareness about the same. Defence, National Security and Terrorism Chiefs of Indian, French Air Forces join ongoing Garuda-VII air exercise The 7th edition of the Bilateral Exercise Garuda VII-2022 is being held between Indian Air Force (IAF), and French Air and Space Force (FASF) at Air Force Station, Jodhpur, Rajasthan from October 26 – November 12, 2022,  In this exercise, FASF will participate with four Rafale fighter aircraft, one A-330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft and a contingent of 220 personnel. The IAF is participating with Su-30 MKI, Rafale, Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas and Jaguar fighter aircraft, as well as the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) and Mi-17 helicopters. It is the 4th edition of exercise hosted by India viz. 2003 (1st), 2006 (3rd) and 2014 (5th) at Air Force stations Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh), Kalaikunda (West Bengal) and Jodhpur, respectively. In France, the second, fourth, and sixth editions took place in 2005, 2010, and 2019. Note  Japan hosts the Malabar multilateral naval exercise involving India, Australia, Japan and the U.S. began on November 8, 2022 as the International Fleet Review and the 18th Western Naval Pacific Symposium, also hosted by Japan, concluded with 13 and 27 countries attending, respectively.
