Important Days Nilgiri Tahr’s Day  – October 7 The Tamil Nadu government has announced that Wildlife Conservator E.R.C. Davidhar's birthday will be celebrated as Nilgiri Tahr Day since 2022. Accordingly, Tahr Day is observed on 7th October every year. About Tahr State animal  of Tamil Nadu is a monogamous mammal native to the south-western part of the Western Ghats. Tahrs are found only in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. In Tamil Nadu, Anaimalai, Mudumalai, Kalakadu-Mundanturai, Williputhur-Meghamalai Tiger Reserves and Siruvani Hills are found in large numbers. The Tahrs known as 'Mountain Protectors' help in developing watersheds also help in maintaining the unique desert-steppe ecosystem that is vital for the survival of mankind. Nilgiri Tahr’s Project The Government of Tamil Nadu has launched a five-year scheme called 'Nilgiri tahr’s Project' to protect the Nilgiri Tahr’s. Awards & Honour Nobel Peace Prize 2023 Nobel Peace Prize 2023 has been announced to Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi. Contribution - Narges Mohammadi has been given this honour for her tireless work against the oppression of women in Iran and for insisting on democracy, despite facing numerous arrests and years of imprisonment. About Narges Mohammadi 'He has been jailed 13 times, convicted 5 times and sentenced to a total of 31 years in prison and 134 lashes,' said the Nobel Committee. Awarded by – The Norwegian Nobel Committee Cash Prize – The Nobel Peace Prize carries a prize money of $1 million (roughly Rs. 8.32 crore) along with a gold medal and a certificate. Important Days World Teacher’s Day – October 5 World Teacher’s Day is held annually on 5 October to celebrate all teachers around the globe. Theme 2023 - "The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage". Note World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated since 1994 by UNESCO. Vallalar's 200th birth anniversary - 5th October October 5, the birth anniversary of Arul Prakasha Vallalar, is observed annually as Thaniperkarunai Day. About Vallalar Ramalinga Adikalar popularly known as Arudprakasa Vallalar was born on 5th October 1823 at Marudur, 10 miles from Chidambaram in Cuddalore district. In 1856 he founded Samarasa Suddha Sanmargam to signify that all faiths have the same truth. He used to sing that whenever he saw a withered crop he said that he had withered, and he established the Satyadharma Road in 1867 to satisfy the hunger of the people. The stove he lit continues to burn till today and fills the stomachs of hungry people. In 1872, he raised the Sathyajnana Sabha in Vadalur. Wrote the prose works Manupati Kanda Vasakam and Jivakarunya Moral. His collection of songs is known as Tiruvarutpa. It is divided into six stages. He founded the Samarasa Sutta Sanmarka Satya Sangam and built the Satya Dharmachala and the Siddhi Complex. He lived as an anorexic doctor. Important Days World Animal Welfare Day – October 4 Every year World Animal Day is observed globally on October 4 with an aim to celebrate animal rights and welfare around the world. Theme 2023 - "Great or Small, Love Them All". World Animal Day has been marked since 1925. According to World Animal Protection, it was started by Heinrich Zimmermann, a cynologist, who organised the first celebration at the Sports Palace in Berlin, which was reportedly attended by over 5,000 people. World Space Week – October 04 to 10 By the resolution of General Assembly on 6 December 1999, proclaimed World Space Week, to celebrate the contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition. Theme 2023 - “Space and Entrepreneurship” Background On 4 October 1957, the launch into outer space of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, opened the way for space exploration. The award was given to 52 persons to recognize their outstanding contributions towards voluntary community social service. It was awarded under 3 different categories - University/ +2 Council, NSS Units and their Programme Officers and NSS Volunteers.
